LG confirms full specs for the LG Velvet launching 7 May

LG revealed full specifications for its increasingly anticipated new smartphone, the LG Velvet (via Yonhap News Agency).

The phone will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G 5G chipset that should hopefully mean it is less expensive than competing phones with the high-end Snapdragon 865. It’ll be available in the above colours of aurora green, aurora white, aurora gray and illusion sunset.

Its triple cameras, arranged in a ‘raindrop’ array according to LG, are a 48Mp main sensor, 8Mp ultra-wide and 5Mp depth sensor, meaning that just like the LG V60 the Velvet does not have a dedicated telephoto lens. The selfie camera is 16Mp, and there’s an in-screen fingerprint sensor.

The display will be a 6.8in curved glass panel with an aspect ratio of 20.5:9, indicating the phone could end up being as large and unwieldy as the V60 despite its apparently sleeker looks. Hopefully, those curved edges will tighten the dimensions to something more pocket friendly.

LG said that the device also has an ASMR recording system using two high-end mics. Maybe it hopes to help people record some calming content in these stressful times.

A 4,300mAh battery will keep the phone going alongside 8GB RAM and 128GB expandable storage. LG also said that a Dual Screen case and stylus pen would be available for the Velvet as optional accessories.

On paper, the specs are near-identical to the V60 save for the chipset, cameras and display curves but should appeal to a different audience. LG will fully unveil the device during a live stream on 7 May, although there’s not much else to announce besides the price, which is not yet official. Some reports suggest it could come in at 800,000 won (around US$650) when it goes on sale on 15 May,.

We hope that is the case, as it’ll show other manufacturers that they can turn out flagship level specs and looks in a phone that costs less because of the choice of the 765G over the 865. LG could have made a canny move here – we just hope it releases the phone outside of Korea. The Velvet has an interesting design (and potential price point) in a sea of $1,000+ black slabs.
