Apple might bundle a 20W fast charger with the iPhone 12

The next iPhones could benefit from faster 20W charging but the verdict is still out on whether this includes every version or solely 2020’s ‘Pro’ models.

It took Apple until last year’s iPhone 11 Pro to offer up a faster charger in-box, despite its phones being able to support the technology for a few generations now. Even then, Apple only upped the wattage of the in-box adapter to 18W.

By comparison, its competitors have been bundling fast-chargers in-box for generations, all the while increasing the wattage and thus their devices’ recharging speeds too. Oppo and Xiaomi are currently the front-runners in this department, with phones like the Oppo Find X2 Pro, which support outlandish 65W fast charging (and beyond).

Meanwhile, it seems Apple is looking to make a more modest push with its own phones’ fast charging technology. According to a post by Singapore-based Twitter user, Mr White, showing images of a transparent Type-A power adapter, he claims that the “New iPhone 12 will Be Equipped with 20W Power Adapter.”

While the authenticity of Mr White’s ‘leak’ (and imagery) can readily be called into question, it would be characteristically ‘Apple’ for the company to offer a small, incremental upgrade, rather than reaching for the lofty heights that Oppo and Xiaomi have approached.

If this turns out to be true, we’re also left wondering whether Apple will finally consider including said charger in-box with all of this year’s iPhone 12 models, including the non-Pro variant. Currently, the iPhone 11 supports the same maximum 18W fast charging as the 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max but doesn’t enjoy the convenience of a compatible charger in-box.
